What do I need to know? : Protect your computer
Update Windows regularly
Microsoft frequently releases new security patches for all their software including Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office. Visit Windows Update once every two weeks to keep your computer updated.
Windows XP users can enable automatic updates by following this simple procedure:
-
Right-click on the “My Computer” icon.
-
Left-click on “Properties”.
-
Select the “Automatic Updates” tab.
-
Tick the “Automatic” radio box.
-
Click the OK button.
Use Antivirus and Anti-spyware Software
There is malicious software on the Internet designed to infiltrate your computer and damage it or compromise your privacy. To ensure that you are protected from these, you need to install antivirus and anti-spyware software.
MWEB has teamed up with international security experts, AVG & Symantec, to provide you with MWEB Total Protection - a comprehensive software package, which protects your computer against viruses and spyware for free.
Spyware is usually distributed via freeware. Upon installing the program, the installation includes a tracking program which logs your Internet movements and sends the data back to the company.
Note: Do not confuse spyware with adware, even though some spyware disguises itself as adware. Adware displays ads for products when freeware is installed and despite the fact that it is annoying, no personal information is sent back to the company. In fact, if you register the program (which you should) the ads will cease.
